Fugalista: Thrill of the hunt!

Yesterday was opening day for Just Between Friends Tulsa Spring Sale. I've been to four JBF events since November 2009 (two months before Libby's birth) and have always scored awesome deals. Like our gently used Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper for half-off of retail. Or her cute rolling/rocking pony for $10.00. She LOVES that thing! And I've always gone on the final day and snapped up all of the 50% deals, especially on clothing, where I have gotten full outfits for $1.00-3.00/each.

That said, I've never been on opening day with the general public. I did go the first time during the "new moms" time that is opened ahead of the general public. So, yesterday was quite the experience. It was PACKED! And frenetic. There were people pushing strollers full of items while they slung crying babies and toddlers on their hips. There were hugely pregnant women dragging laundry baskets overflowing with baby gear. The check-out line took 1.5 hours!

Armed with $100 bill and my list, I set out on my hunt. I am a major bugetzilla and frugalista. I love bargain shopping and think consignment is the way to go when you're a mom trying to keep up with a growing child! 95% of Libby's things are gently-used. Buying second-hand items are good for mama's wallet and good for mother earth too. I cannot imagine trying to fully outfit the nursery and layette and all of the things we've used in the 13 months of Libby's life if I had to pay full retail price!

I started with the toys and books. I snapped up this classic Fisher-Price Corn Popper Push Toy for $5.

And this awesome set of small, chunky board book ABC blocks for another five bucks. I had wanted to get this for her birthday, but hadn't gotten around to ordering it off of Amazon.

I got a slew of other books too. Libby's favorite things right now are books. She adores them. And we read through the ones she has over-and-over again, several hours a day. She has many of them memorized. She really likes the ones that have photos rather than illustrations and those are hard to find. So I snapped up three of those, including one with a built-in mirror that she can see herself in while she's looking at the pages. I also got two fabric, "quiet" books. One is peek-a-boo with fabric flaps that she can lift to find the characters. The other is a Taggie book, that is great for her to have in her crib.

Next up was clothing and shoes. Libby is wearing a 24 months/2T and her growth has dramatically slowed down since August. For the first half of her life she went up in size in her clothing about every 6-8 weeks! So by summer she was in a size 18 months! In December we moved her up to size 24 months/2 T. Carter's outfits tend to fit her really well and for quite a while, so I bought several cotton knit one-piece rompers and dresses with bloomers. The other thing I appreciate about Carter's is that their styling for babies and toddlers is age-appropriate. I find that many of the other affordable children's clothing lines (where brand-new outfits are $25 or less) are like scaled-down, mini-tween and teen designs. It's sad, really. Libby wears cloth diapers and is on the chunkier side, so she needs things that are roomy and stretchy. And even if she could fit in slimmer designs, I just don't get why babies and toddlers need skinny or boot-cut jeans and tops that look like mirco-versions of things that 18-year-olds wear.

Maybe it's because I am an "older" first-time mom and other moms are closer to being in their teen years than not, especially around here, but I just don't think it's cute at all to let littles dress like they're older. Even my tween niece wants to wear things that I would have worn when I was 16 or 17 years old! I feel like such a fuddy-duddy. I am not prude at all, but what's wrong with little girls looking like little girls? Even the shorts and things that are out now are super short! Like with a 2-inch inseam. And why do toddler's clothes not have fully-elasticized waists. I cannot find one pair of woven or denim bottoms that are full elasticized. So we're sticking with comfy, cotton knits. To each her own, but I think moms who let their little dress like they're older are going to be in a world of hurt once the kids are actually teens. I mean, if she's allowed to wear a bikini bathing suit at age 5 why not at 15? Daisy dukes are cute when you're 3 so why not at 13? I'm just not going to go there. If Libby is anything like her mama, she will develop early. And she won't need any help in the looking-older-than-her-age department.

*stepping off my soap-box*

To round out the spree, I got a darling pair of multi-colored sandals. Libby is really into shoes right now after she played with the corn popper push toy and looked at all her books she just had to try on the sandals! This morning, she wanted to put them on over her footed pajamas. Too cute! So it was $97.12 well-spent. Usually, I got back to JBF on the closing Saturday to get the 50% deals. But I don't think I will this time...even yesterday, her size-range was pretty picked over...probably all of the "early-bird" shoppers (those who volunteer, etc. get first dibs) and I am not interested in getting items that I feel are not really age-appropriate styling. That said, I think she'll be pretty well covered for this Spring and Summer, although I'd still like to find a swim suit. It's so nice to feel confident in her sizing...this time last year I had purchased 6-9 and 9-12 month clothing thinking it would last her through the summer and I was so wrong!

Awarded!

Fellow Tulsan, Cindy of Cindy's Clipboard has awarded this blog a little warm fuzzy! Apparently, she had stumbled across our blog via the Blog Oklahoma Ring. How cool! I know that there are a few locals reading my rambles, but I had no idea that they were award-worthy. Thanks Cindy! I love reading about all of your travel adventures and look forward to more of your daily musings!

When I started this blog is was meant to be a diary of sorts, capturing this transition of ours-- from life as we knew it in California to our brand new life in Oklahoma. It was also a way for us to post our little happenings for friends and family to read whenever they felt like it. It's been nearly a year!

Honestly, I don't know how many family and friends follow us by blog, especially now that we're all on Facebook. That said, I have a whole new group of readers via the blogesphere, and that's pretty cool! So...the rules of receiving this award are:

1) accept the award
2) post it on your blog together with the name of the person who has granted the award and his or her blog link.
3) pass the award to 5 other blogs that you enjoy following. Remember to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award.

And here are my five:

Surviving Oz - Cali girl living and loving Down Under.
Passion and Paradise - Midwestern newlyweds experiencing life in Hawaii.
Good Eats 'n Sweet Treats - California native cooking up a storm in Texas.
The Odyssey - Two American newlyweds living it up in Athens, Greece.
Transatlantic Blonde - American woman having a rockin' good time in Glasgow, Scotland.

Notice a theme? I am in very good company! Maybe our next move should be overseas?!? Wouldn't that be an adventure?

My newest obsession

Lemon Cream Cake from The Olive Garden. It is a delicate white cake and lemon cream filling with a vanilla crumb topping. I don't really even like the Olive Garden, but this cake is to die for! The lemony cream filling is heavenly and the crumbly topping is delish! It is not at all diet-friendly, but hey! I am eating clean for life and every once in a while you just have to have a splurge. The portions are huge, so I had half a piece and it was so satisfying.

We're not really chain restaurant folks and generally prefer to patronize local, unique business rather than national chains. But from time to time we find something from a chain outlet that we enjoy and find ourselves wanting to go back for more. Like the California Turkey Burger with Sweet Potato Fries from T.G.I.Fridays. I just have to have one every couple of weeks!

Well yesterday, as part of a staff appreciation day that I am my fellow executive directors hosted for our staff, we ordered catering from our local Olive Garden. Not my style, but the majority of folks love it so that's what we went with for lunch. Along with the requisite salad, bread sticks, chicken alfredo and lasagna, we also ordered one of their chocolate raspberry cheesecakes and lemon cream cake. OMG! The lemon cream cake is like heaven on a fork! I have only ever eaten at Olive Garden with my twin brother's family and we never ordered dessert because we were always too stuffed by then to even want it.

I love all things lemon (lemon bars, lemon meringue pie, lemonade, etc.) and this, literally, takes the cake! The creamy filling is almost like cheese cake, but not as firm or tart. And the cake is light and fluffy and very lemony. The finish is the vanilla crumb coating...so good. So as much as I loathe Olive Garden, I think I will at least have to order a slice of this cake to go every once in a while. It's that good. There's even a knock-off recipe (Olive Garden keeps theirs a well guarded secret, but someone has been clever enough to re-create it.) if you'd like to make your own.

My new favorite show...

The Starter Wife (USA Network) with Debra Messing (of Will and Grace fame) is wickedly smart and funny. I love the "Ally McBeal-esque" dream sequences. Even better? You can watch it for free on Hulu.com (and in 45 minutes, no less, with limited commercial interruptions). We're loving Hulu so much we've decided to cancel our Cable TV and just keep our high speed internet connection. Next step? Figuring out how to hook the computer up to the TV so we can watch shows together.

Here's the second episode:

In case you missed it...

This was awesome!

Must see...

Can't say it any better than this...

Mamma Mia! My, my...

Okay, so some of you might think this is weird, but eh, not me. Anyway...I went to lunch today with three girls that I have only "met" online. Yeah, virtual strangers from the internet! Sounds risky? Not really in this situation.
Let me explain...

When I was planning our wedding I became a regular on The Knot, a website for to-be-weds. I was mostly on the Hawaii Board and "met" all kinds of women from Hawaii and around the world who were also planning their weddings in Hawaii. Some of these gals I even met in real life, for lunches that "knotties" (the ladies who post on the website) call GTG (get togethers). There were several NorCal2HIKnotties, a couple I even helped with wedding planning. Anyway, one of these knotties was a make-up artist from LA but moved to Oklahoma to be closer to her man's family. Tulsa, Oklahoma! They're actually already married and have two small daughters, but they never had a real wedding, so they're renewing their vows in Maui in May. Another thing we have in common? Her hubby is African American and she's Caucasian. So she has been helpful in adressing my trepidation about being in a mixed-race marriage in the South.
Anyway, she and I have corresponded via email more and more, especially once I knew that we'd would be relocating here. When I came for my interview in May, she even left a little "Sooner" welcome gift in the hotel room for me. She has advised me on places to see, eat and play here in "T-town". But we've never met face-to-face. Until today.

The other two gals, I've gotten to know on The Nest. This is the site you are "kicked over" to by The Knot after you, well, tie the knot. It's for newlyweds. I mostly frequented the Northern California and Money Matters boards, but once I knew we were moving here, I started visiting the Oklahoma board too. That's where I met two locals (most of the other posters are in Oklahoma City) and where we got the ball rolling on a "nestie" GTG.

Fast forward to today....the four of us met up at Pei Wei, an Asian diner (owned by the same company as P.F. Changs) for lunch and then we went to see Mamma Mia! It was so nice to meet women who are not co-workers and just talk about married life. Two of the gals have small children and are stay at home moms. One is remodeling her home so they can sell it and move to a bigger place and think about starting a family. All lead fascinating lives. So it's a start to making new friends in this new town. At the very least, I'll know some ladies who like to take in lunch and a "chic flick" every once in a while.
By the way, Mamma Mia! was a funny and touching movie. Meryly Streep was awesome! She is a study in living the words, even if they are cheesy ABBA lyrics! And Julie Walters and Christine Baranski, her side kicks, were a freaking riot. I saw the stage show, many years ago, in San Francisco, and loved it. Today, I loved it even more. And it has made my need to see Greece all the greater. Go see it! You will dance in your seat and laugh out loud!

I think I am in love...

with Gordman's....a discount department store that feels sort of like Kohl's but is priced like Ross. LOVE IT! They only exist in the midwest. Who knew? I think they would do really well in CA for sure. My direct deposit will definitely be getting familiar with Gordman's. LOL!

This weekend was very relaxed...I did some chores of course, catching up on sleep and explored the town a bit. And in four days Joseph and Bella will be here at last.

SUPER Target!

Today was my first day off in over a month! So, even though the puggies woke me up at 7 am for their breakfast, I returned to bed and lounged around until noon! When I finally got up and got dressed, I decided to run some errands. When I came to Tulsa last month (for my in-person interview) the hotel was right next to a new shopping center which had a Super Target.

What is a Super Target, you wonder?

It's a fully stocked Target store that also has a full grocery store in it! Be still my beating heart. And it's only 10 minutes from our new house! It has a deli, produce, bakery, as well as aisles and aisled of food, just like any grocery store. I found lots of organic stuff under Target's Archer Farms label that is very similar to what we normally buy at Trader Joe's. So I am thrilled! In San Jose, I would shop at Trader Joe's and Target on Coleman at Taylor at least once a week. So now, I can do it all in one place! Woo hoo!

And there's other shopping in the area....Kohl's, DSW, etc. So now, in addition to The Promenade Mall across from our home, I have found the Woodland Mall. And I drove different streets and got a better feel for how Tulsa is layed out, which I must say is quite easy. Everything is on a grid and the streets run straight through, with the same name. Not like San Jose, where it took me nearly a decade to figure out that Alma turned into Santa Clara which turned into the Alameda! SHEESH!

With the day off, I am missing J terribly! I have been so busy with work, but today, it was just me and the doggies. So we played and napped and watched movies in bed (Luigi loves to watch TV!). I saw "No Reservations" with Catherine Zeta Jones, Aaron Eckert and Abigail Breslen. It was really cute! Tomorrow will probably be more of the same...except I will take the puppies in to get groomed. Fun! But it's way better than trying to wrestle them myself! I might head towards the river tomorrow and check it out.
